Numerous European Battery Energy Storage System Project Deals in M&A, Financing, and Market Access

A deal was signed for a project in Romania by the executives of Verbund, Prime Batteries, and Enevo. To meet the increasing demand for battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Europe, several companies have been engaged in securing high-capacity projects and establishing market routes. Among the recent developments are acquisitions, financial agreements, and initiatives to install multiple gigawatts of energy storage capacity by project owners including Premier Energy Group, Eco Stor, Ingrid Capacity, Ric Energy, Ganfeng Lithium, EP Group, RWE, and Giga Storage.

In Romania, Premier Energy Group obtained a 200MW/400MWh BESS project near Iasi, with construction set to commence in 2026 and expected to be operational by late 2026 or early 2027. The primary goal of this project is to enhance grid flexibility and support the integration of more renewable energy sources. Premier Energy Group is currently exploring different financing options with the hope of establishing a long-term financial structure. Although not explicitly mentioned, there is speculation that this project could be amongst the beneficiaries of a recently held EU-backed capital expenditure support scheme.

Furthermore, Austria’s Verbund Wind Power Romania has joined forces with Prime Batteries Technology and Enevo Group to construct a 48MW/76MWh energy storage project in the Tulcea County. The primary objective of this project is to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources and improve the operational flexibility of Verbund’s local renewable assets. Construction for this project is scheduled to begin in February 2026, with completion projected for September 2026.

Eco Stor, a project owner-operator and EPC, has sealed a long-term agreement with Alpiq for a 103.5MW/238MWh BESS project in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Similarly, Ingrid Capacity has formed a partnership with Energiequelle for the development of 200MW of grid-scale projects in Germany. On the other hand, Ric Energy Group has successfully acquired a 200MW BESS project in Italy within the Apulia region. Italy has seen a surge in activity with the completion of its MACSE scheme’s auction and investors eagerly awaiting long-term revenue contracts.

In the Netherlands, Giga Storage has established a partnership with Vattenfall for a 300MW/1,200MWh BESS project. In the UK, RWE is set to construct a 350MW/700MWh BESS project in Wales called Pembroke Battery Storage as part of the larger Pembroke Net Zero Centre project. Ganfeng Lithium and EP Group have also secured partnerships with EDF and GridBeyond, respectively, for the optimization of their BESS projects in the UK.

These ongoing developments across Europe highlight the growing demand and momentum behind battery energy storage systems in the region, driven by the need for enhanced grid flexibility, renewable integration, and operational efficiency.
