Popshelf, Dollar General to close approximately 100 stores across the country

In the latest news from the retail sector, Dollar General, a national retailer, is set to close nearly 100 stores in 2025. This decision was revealed in the company’s fourth-quarter earnings report. The announcement includes plans to close 96 Dollar General stores and 45 Popshelf stores during the first quarter of 2025, with an additional six Popshelf stores slated for conversion into Dollar General outlets.

Dollar General’s Chief Executive Officer, Todd Vasos, explained that the decision to close stores was part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance its business operations following the progress made in fiscal 2024. Vasos emphasized that despite the store closures representing less than one percent of the total store base, the move was deemed necessary to better serve customers and communities.

The company’s move to close stores was based on a comprehensive review known as the “store portfolio optimization review,” conducted during the fourth quarter of 2024. This review process identified underperforming stores earmarked for closure or rebranding after considering various factors such as individual store performance, expected future performance, and operating conditions.

At present, Dollar General operates over 20,000 stores across 48 states under various banners such as Dollar General, DG Market, DGX, and Popshelf. Popshelf is a retail store concept introduced by Dollar General in October 2020, focusing on providing customers with an engaging, affordable, and stress-free shopping experience. The store emphasizes seasonal and home decor products, home cleaning supplies, and party goods, among other items.

The success of the Popshelf concept led Dollar General to announce plans to open approximately 1,000 Popshelf stores by the end of the 2025 fiscal year. However, the closure of 45 Popshelf stores in 2025 will reduce the chain’s total number of stores to around 175 locations. Despite this setback, Popshelf remains popular with customers and continues to expand its presence in the retail market.

In summary, Dollar General’s decision to close stores in 2025 is part of its strategic efforts to strengthen its business operations and better serve its customer base. The closure of underperforming stores and the conversion of select stores to Dollar General outlets reflect the company’s commitment to adapting to market conditions and improving overall performance.
