How many Dollar General stores are closing in Tennessee?

Dollar General has made the decision to close approximately 100 stores nationwide, in addition to 45 Popshelf stores, throughout 2025. While the company did not disclose the specific locations of these closures, Tennessee is home to a substantial number of Dollar General stores, boasting several hundred outlets across the state.

The plan to shutter nearly 100 Dollar General stores aligns with the company’s strategy for the first quarter of 2025, alongside the closure of 45 Popshelf stores. Moreover, the company announced the conversion of six Popshelf outlets into Dollar General stores.

Despite Dollar General reporting a 4.5% increase in net sales for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, reaching $10.3 billion, and a 5% rise in net sales for the entire fiscal year to $40.6 billion, operating profits dropped by 49.2% in the last quarter to $294.2 million and by 29.9% for the fiscal year to $1.7 billion. The decline stemmed mainly from $232 million in charges incurred in the fourth quarter due to store closures and impairment charges associated with Popshelf stores.

CEO Todd Vasos emphasized the importance of strengthening the company’s core business foundation following the progress made in their “Back to Basics” efforts during fiscal 2024. Vasos explained that although the number of store closures represents less than one percent of the overall store base, the decision was made to enhance the company’s ability to serve its customers and communities effectively.

Dollar General currently operates over 20,000 stores under various banners, including Dollar General, DG Market, DGX, and Popshelf, spread across 48 states. The company introduced a new retail concept named Popshelf in October 2020, aiming to cultivate an engaging, affordable, and stress-free shopping experience focusing on seasonal and home décor products.

In light of the store closures announced for 2025, customers and communities in Tennessee may be impacted, given the significant presence of Dollar General outlets in the state. While the exact locations of the closures remain undisclosed, the restructuring aligns with the company’s objective to reinforce its operational groundwork and ensure the continued provision of quality services to customers across its remaining stores.
