Important Tip for Gmail users: Disable this automatic setting immediately

These features, which may allow Google access to your personal and work emails and attachments, are raising privacy issues. Engineer Dave Jones warns that Gmail users have been automatically opted in to this data sharing scheme and must manually turn off Smart Features in two separate locations within their settings.

However, a proposed class-action lawsuit against Google alleges that the company has “secretly” turned on Gemini, giving them access to users’ entire email histories. Google denies these claims, stating that they do not use Gmail content to train their Gemini AI model. Despite this reassurance, users concerned about their privacy can still opt-out of these AI features that may compromise their data.

To opt out of Gmail’s AI-training feature, users can manually disable Smart Features in both desktop and mobile settings. On desktop, users can access the settings in the General tab and unselect the Smart Features option. In the Manage Workplace smart feature settings menu, users can further toggle features on and off for Google Workspace and other Google products.

On mobile devices, users can change these settings by accessing the Data Privacy option in their settings menu. By toggling off Smart Features and opting out of Google Workspace smart feature settings, users can prevent Google from accessing their private data for AI training. However, opting out may mean losing certain Gmail features like smart compose and automatic email filtering.
