Speed skating sprinters ready for debut in Milan

South Korean speed skating sprinters will be taking to the ice in Milan for their first event in the upcoming Winter Olympics. Kim Min-sun and Lee Na-hyun will be participating in the women’s 1,000 meters at Milano Speed Skating Stadium in northern Italy. Though the 500m is their main event, this race will allow them to gauge their competition before the shorter event later in the games.

Lee has had a successful season so far, ranking 12th overall with 132 points. She achieved her personal best time of 1:13.92 during the season’s first World Cup in Salt Lake City and finished fifth in Hamar with a time of 1:15.99. On the other hand, Kim, while not having any top-10 finishes, recorded her best time of 1:13.98 this season in Calgary. Her personal best remains at 1:13.42 from January 2024.

The current leader in the World Cup standings is Femke Kok from the Netherlands, with 264 points and a personal best time of 1:12.36. Her compatriot Jutta Leerdam is close behind in second place. The Dutch athletes have been dominant in the World Cup, winning races and setting impressive times, making them strong contenders at the Olympics.

In addition to the speed skaters, the ice dance team of Hannah Lim and Quan Ye will be showcasing their skills in the individual figure skating competition at Milano Ice Skating Arena. They already made their Olympic debut in the team event, scoring 70.55 points in the rhythm dance. With only the top 20 couples qualifying for the free dance, they will be looking to secure their spot in the next round.

Lastly, South Korean luger Jung Hye-sun will be participating in the women’s singles competition at Cortina Sliding Centre. Her runs are set to take place in Cortina d’Ampezzo, marking her first competitive outing in the Winter Olympics.

The stage is set for an exciting competition in Milan, with athletes from various countries vying for top honors in speed skating, figure skating, and luge. As these talented individuals showcase their skills on the international stage, fans around the world eagerly anticipate the thrilling performances that await them.
