Vancouver Whitecaps and MLS reach settlement over missed Lionel Messi game

Vancouver Whitecaps and Major League Soccer have reached a settlement in a class-action lawsuit over a missed match featuring star players like Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. The lead plaintiff, Ho Chun, alleged that misleading promotional material led fans to believe these players would participate in the game against Inter Miami on May 25, 2024. However, days before the match, it was confirmed that these players would not be traveling to Canada due to a decision by former head coach Gerardo Martino.

With over 50,000 fans expected to attend the game, the Whitecaps attempted to appease the frustrated fans by offering 50% off in-stadium food and drinks. While both MLS and the Whitecaps deny any liability in the matter, they chose to settle the lawsuit to avoid further litigation. The court ordered them to pay a total of $450,000 Canadian ($329,000) to three organizations, equally distributing the funds.

The settlement also requires the Whitecaps to revise their ticketing terms to include language that informs ticketholders of the potential for roster changes and player absences at any time before or during the event. This aims to prevent future misunderstandings like the one that led to the class-action lawsuit.

In response to the settlement approval, Vancouver Whitecaps FC released a statement confirming the resolution of the lawsuit related to the 2024 match against Inter Miami CF. The terms of the settlement agreement will be implemented as per the court’s instructions.

While this legal battle has come to an end with a settlement, it underscores the importance of transparent communication between sports teams and fans. The inclusion of specific language in ticketing terms can help manage expectations and prevent disappointment among supporters when unforeseen circumstances lead to changes in player participation. The focus on clear and honest communication can strengthen the relationship between teams and their fan base, enhancing trust and loyalty in the long run.
