Rubber Boosts Agricultural Exports Growth in Côte d’Ivoire

The recent global market outlook from the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC) indicates a significant shift in the natural rubber industry. Côte d’Ivoire is on track to become the world’s third-largest producer of natural rubber, surpassing Vietnam and trailing only Thailand and Indonesia. This transformation is attributed to the continuous expansion of planted areas and the high productivity levels exhibited by smallholder farmers within the country.

Forecasts suggest that Côte d’Ivoire will increase its rubber production by bringing an additional 500,000 hectares into cultivation by 2036, supplementing the existing 722,000 hectares already under cultivation. This ambitious plan underscores the remarkable growth experienced by Côte d’Ivoire’s rubber sector in recent years, positioning it as a key player in the global rubber market.

While cocoa remains a dominant agricultural commodity in Côte d’Ivoire, rubber has emerged as a formidable contender in terms of export revenue. Over the past decade, rubber has outperformed other agricultural exports, showing consistent revenue growth compared to the volatile trends observed in cocoa and cashew exports. During the period from 2015 to 2024, rubber export earnings surged from 296.3 billion CFA francs to 1,489.9 billion CFA francs, making it the second-largest export earner after cocoa.

The impressive growth in rubber exports is primarily attributed to the steady increase in export volumes, which rose from approximately 410,000 tonnes to 1.7 million tonnes. Key export markets for Ivorian rubber include China, India, Malaysia, and the United States. This surge in export volumes reflects the robust global demand for rubber, particularly from the tire manufacturing industry.

The expansion of rubber production in Côte d’Ivoire has largely been driven by smallholder farmers operating in various forest regions. This crop offers a viable alternative to cocoa cultivation and provides farmers with a stable source of income through year-round tapping activities. As the country’s second-largest export earner, rubber has become a critical component of Côte d’Ivoire’s economy, contributing significantly to its overall growth and development.

Looking ahead, the focus in Côte d’Ivoire’s rubber sector is geared towards enhancing plantation yields and promoting domestic value addition. The next phase of growth is poised to involve downstream processing activities, such as tire manufacturing and the production of technical and molded rubber products. By capitalizing on the strong global demand for rubber and fostering a culture of innovation and sustainability, Côte d’Ivoire is well-positioned to solidify its position as a global leader in the natural rubber industry.
