Former insider trader co-founds AI firm, rises to C-suite

Oliver Curtis, a former white-collar criminal in Australia, seems to be on the verge of turning his fortunes around nearly ten years after his conviction for insider trading. Following a one-year stint at Cooma Correctional Centre, Curtis, a former banker married to Roxy Jacenko, is now being hailed as a potential billionaire involved in the AI industry.

Co-founding the Singapore-based AI infrastructure company, Firmus, with his cousin Tim Rosenfield, Curtis is aiming for a significant listing on the Australian Securities Exchange worth $6 billion. Firmus specializes in developing cooling technology for data centers supporting AI infrastructure, with a notable project underway in Tasmania. The company has received substantial financial support from various prominent entities, including billionaires, superannuation funds, institutional investors, and Nvidia, a leading AI chipmaker.

Should Firmus succeed, Curtis could amass substantial wealth, disproving the notion that second chances are rare. Curtis’ former friend, John Hartman, who testified against him in the insider trading trial, found success after being recruited by billionaire Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest to lead his private investment firm. Similarly, Curtis swiftly re-entered the business world after prison, co-founding e-Nome, a medical cryptocurrency startup with his father, Nick Curtis.

Although e-Nome did not achieve its intended goals, Curtis went on to establish Firmus with Rosenfield, Levee, and Nick Curtis as the chair. Initially focused on cryptocurrency mining efficiency, the company shifted its focus to AI data center technology as the cryptocurrency market waned. Firmus aims to revolutionize cooling technology for AI data centers through proprietary liquid cooling systems, providing a cost-effective competitive edge in the emerging industry.

Former Telstra executive Ted Pretty, who played a key role in pivoting Firmus towards AI data centers, highlighted the company’s innovative approach to cooling technology amidst the evolving tech landscape. Firmus envisions its liquid cooling systems as a game-changer in the industry, providing cost-efficient solutions for managing computing power in AI facilities.

Despite lacking technical backgrounds, Curtis, Rosenfield, and Levee have steered Firmus towards success within the AI sector. The company’s focus on creating purpose-built data centers for AI operations underscores its commitment to innovation and efficiency in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Firmus’ dedication to developing cutting-edge cooling solutions for AI factories positions it favorably in the competitive market, potentially paving the way for Curtis to achieve remarkable success post-incarceration.
