Allegations of Market Manipulation in India and Crypto Sector Against Jane Street
A recent report by BlockBeats has brought to light some troubling allegations of market manipulation involving Jane Street Group, a global trading firm. According to public information disclosed on February 26, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) imposed a temporary ban on Jane Street Group back in July 2025. The ban was a result of SEBI accusing Jane Street of manipulating Indian indices, particularly the Bank Nifty Index, through the use of high-frequency trading strategies.
SEBI’s allegations against Jane Street revolved around the firm’s practices of manipulating indices by purchasing underlying stocks in the spot market and futures ahead of derivatives expiration. Jane Street would then profit from options, resulting in retail investors trading at disadvantageous prices. As a response to these allegations, SEBI took decisive action by freezing approximately INR 4.843 billion (equivalent to around USD 565 million) in assets belonging to Jane Street. Furthermore, the regulatory body also imposed a ban on Jane Street, preventing the firm from engaging in any trading activities within India’s securities markets.
More recently, further accusations of market manipulation by Jane Street have emerged. The court-appointed bankruptcy trustee of Terraform Labs initiated legal proceedings against Jane Street in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The lawsuit accuses Jane Street of involvement in front-running trades and profiting from non-public, insider information provided by Terra insiders during Terra’s collapse.
In addition to these legal battles, the crypto community has also raised concerns about Jane Street’s alleged market manipulation activities. Specifically, Jane Street has been accused of facilitating market-making for Bitcoin ETFs and Silver ETFs, raising suspicions within the crypto market about the firm’s practices.
The allegations against Jane Street paint a troubling picture of potential misconduct and unethical behavior within the financial markets. As regulatory bodies like SEBI continue to crack down on market manipulation and unfair trading practices, it is essential for firms like Jane Street to operate with transparency and integrity. The outcome of these legal battles and investigations will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the future of trading practices and market regulation.
