Officials surprised by finding secret Tesla facility: ‘We were unsure of its purpose’

Officials in South Texas have expressed their surprise upon uncovering a hidden Tesla operation. The company has been discharging treated wastewater from its lithium refinery into a local drainage ditch without notifying the district responsible for its maintenance.

The issue came to light when Tesla, having obtained a state-issued permit, began releasing up to 231,000 gallons of treated wastewater daily into an unnamed ditch that eventually flows into Petronila Creek. However, drainage district officials were unaware of the installation of a pipeline across their easement. Upon encountering the discharge, they were taken aback by the sight of the water.

Describing the water as “very dark and murky,” drainage district consultant Steve Ray expressed his concerns about the unusual appearance of the water, stating that it was unlike the norm of clear, running water they were accustomed to seeing. The lithium refinery began operations in December 2024, focusing on producing battery-grade lithium specifically for electric vehicle batteries. While Tesla’s permit allows for wastewater discharge, it does not grant permission to utilize private or public property for conveyance purposes, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The implications of this discovery are worrisome as Petronila Creek, which receives the discharge, eventually flows into Baffin Bay, a delicate coastal ecosystem vital for tourism and local livelihoods.
