Indonesia to Seek More Trade Talks After US Supreme Court Decision

The Indonesian government has affirmed that continued discussions with the United States are essential following the US Supreme Court’s overturning of President Donald Trump’s authority to impose specific global reciprocal tariffs. The decision, which came soon after the signing of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) in Washington, has brought about new legal intricacies to the bilateral agreement.

“There will be further talks between both sides regarding the recent legal rulings; Indonesia is dedicated to prioritizing national interests,” stated Haryo Limanseto, the spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, on Saturday.

The US Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling determined that the President had surpassed his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Despite this setback, President Trump quickly retaliated by introducing a 10% “global import tariff” through alternative means.

Haryo emphasized that the ART has not yet been implemented, as both countries still need to navigate their individual domestic approval processes in light of the shifting legal environment.
