Freight Market Approaches 2026 with Cautious Optimism as Strategies Differ
The freight market is looking towards 2026 with a sense of cautious optimism after a period of significant volatility, according to data collected by Echo Global Logistics. As the landscape of the industry transforms, shippers and carriers are embracing the upcoming year with divergent strategies.
Echo conducted a survey involving 1,024 shippers and 832 carriers during the months of October and November 2025. The results revealed a stark contrast in the expectations of these two groups, particularly when it comes to pricing, despite both parties foreseeing an increase in volume.
Carriers are gearing up for a more favorable pricing landscape in the upcoming year. A significant majority of carriers anticipate a rise in both contract and spot rates in 2026, with many predicting gains in the range of mid-single digits or even higher. This level of confidence in pricing is evident even as carriers remain cautious about expanding their capacity. Approximately half of the carriers surveyed expressed a measured approach to increasing their capacity, suggesting a balanced market approach.
On the other hand, shippers have a more subdued outlook on price hikes in 2026. While a considerable portion of shippers expect rate increases, their predictions tend to be more moderate compared to carriers. Shippers’ anticipated rate increase percentages mostly fall in the low-to-mid single digits, reflecting a more conservative stance on pricing.
Despite the discrepancy in expectations surrounding pricing, both shippers and carriers share a common belief in volume growth for the coming year. A majority of participants from both sides anticipate increased freight volumes in 2026, indicating a general sense of optimism regarding the overall economic outlook and demand for shipping services.
Another noteworthy finding from the survey is that shippers and carriers are also diverging in their technology investments. Carriers appear to be more inclined towards investing in technology solutions to optimize their operations and enhance efficiency. In contrast, shippers are more focused on leveraging technology for real-time tracking and visibility, indicating a shift towards greater collaboration and transparency in the supply chain.
Overall, the data from the Echo survey paints a picture of a freight market entering 2026 with a cautious sense of optimism. While shippers and carriers may have different strategies and outlooks on pricing and technology investments, the general sentiment is one of growth and adaptability in response to the changing market dynamics.
