ACLU sues Federal, State, and Local Police over Mass Immigration Raid.
The ACLU of Idaho and the American Civil Liberties Union recently initiated legal action by filing a class action lawsuit against federal, state, and local law enforcement officials for conducting a mass immigration raid at a family event in Wilder, Idaho. The incident, which occurred in October 2025, involved over 200 officers armed with heavy equipment and weapons who targeted approximately 400 attendees at the La Catedral arena, detaining them under harsh conditions for a prolonged period of time.
During the peaceful and celebratory atmosphere at the family event, law enforcement personnel stormed the arena, resorting to aggressive tactics such as pushing people to the ground, forcibly removing individuals from their vehicles, firing rubber bullets, and deploying flashbang grenades, causing chaos and fear among the spectators. Families, including children and U.S. citizens, were subjected to unwarranted treatment, including being handcuffed and detained under armed guard for several hours.
According to Jenn Rolnick Borchetta, the deputy director of policing at the ACLU, the plaintiffs in the lawsuit were dehumanized and deprived of their fundamental rights by immigration authorities and their collaborators who prioritize immigration arrests over respecting basic human rights. This incident in Wilder mirrors similar oppressive actions taken in other cities like Minneapolis and Chicago, where the administration under Trump implemented discriminatory practices that undermine public safety.
The lawsuit, led by the ACLU on behalf of three Latino families, seeks to challenge the constitutionality of ICE operations that employ biased methods based on ethnicity. Among the plaintiffs is Juana Rodriguez, a U.S. citizen, who alongside her 3-year-old son, endured the distressing experience of being handcuffed and held in zip ties by law enforcement officials. Juana’s young son was also coerced by officers to grasp her turned-out pocket as a means of further intimidation, highlighting the traumatizing effects of the raid on innocent individuals.
The ACLU’s legal action represents a critical step in holding law enforcement agencies accountable for their discriminatory practices and unethical conduct, particularly in the realm of immigration enforcement. By exposing these incidents and seeking justice for affected families, the ACLU underscores the importance of upholding civil liberties and preventing state-sanctioned abuses of power.
From the unwarranted and violent actions taken against innocent spectators at the family event in Wilder, Idaho, the ACLU’s lawsuit stands as a beacon of hope for challenging systemic injustice and advocating for the protection of constitutional rights for all individuals, regardless of their ethnic background or immigration status. The legal battle initiated by the ACLU serves as a reminder that accountability and justice are indispensable in safeguarding democracy and civil rights in the face of oppressive governmental actions.
