Winter wildfires prompt evacuations in North Gyeongsang

Winter wildfires became a concerning issue as evacuations were carried out in the region of North Gyeongsang. The situation escalated when three separate wildfires erupted in the area consecutively. To address the emergencies, the Korea Forest Service took swift action by deploying 31 helicopters in response to a blaze that started in a mountainous location in Ipcheon-ri, Gyeongju. This deployment occurred at sunrise on Sunday following the initiation of a Level 1 wildfire response at 5:30 a.m.

A Level 1 response is typically warranted in cases where the affected site is projected to span less than 25 acres and up to 247 acres. Concerned authorities reported that the fire line in Munmu-daewang-myeon extended to 1.74 kilometers, affecting an area of 25 acres with roughly 60 percent of the blaze contained. The region was experiencing strong winds blowing at a speed of 4.3 meters per second.

In addition to the Munmu-daewang-myeon fire, another wildfire emerged in the vicinity of Sindae-ri, also situated in Gyeongju, approximately 11 kilometers from the initial outbreak. The fire line was reported to be about 0.92 kilometers long with an affected area spanning 10.5 acres. As of the latest reports, authorities had managed to contain around 94 percent of this secondary fire.

Further complicating matters, a third wildfire broke out in Yangnam-myeon, geographically close to the Gyeongju Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant Industrial Complex. As preparedness measures, the government and forestry agencies mentioned that while the fire’s spread towards the industrial site was not anticipated, preemptive actions were being taken.

In a demonstration of their commitment to resolving the issue at hand, a total of 341 personnel and 97 pieces of equipment were dispatched to the affected regions of Munmu-daewang-myeon and Yangnam-myeon. Authorities in Gyeongju issued evacuation orders for nearby villagers, leading to 106 residents from 10 different locations evacuating their homes. Fortunately, thirteen residents have already returned to their houses following the containment efforts.

Further aggravating the situation, a fourth wildfire sparked in the surroundings of Jidong-ri, Pohang, indicating a trend of wildfires across the North Gyeongsang region. Governor Lee Cheol-woo initiated a comprehensive response strategy to tackle the escalating spread of wildfires. Stressing the importance of utilizing all available resources for evacuation and containment procedures, Governor Lee highlighted that residents’ safety remained the utmost priority.

The evolving scenario prompted a collective call-to-action from local authorities and emergency services to unite efforts in safeguarding the affected population and curtailing the wildfires’ progression. Public safety measures, combined with swift response strategies, have been pivotal in addressing the recurring wildfires in North Gyeongsang, emphasizing the significance of preparedness and proactive risk mitigation in managing such natural disasters effectively.
