Ethereum hits a nine-month low, loses over $100 billion in market value in one week
Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, is currently experiencing a significant decline in its market capitalization, having lost over $100 billion in the last week alone. The price of Ethereum has plummeted to under $2,200, marking its lowest point in nearly nine months, according to data from CoinGecko. Despite attempts to predict a bottom in the market action, the price of Ethereum remains fragile and vulnerable to further declines.
Jim Hwang, the Chief Operating Officer of crypto investment firm Firinne Capital, noted that historical volatility data from April 2025 suggests potential support levels around $1,500. This indicates that Ethereum might still have room to fall before stabilizing. Additionally, spot Ethereum ETFs have seen outflows totaling $342 million since the beginning of the year. This outflow of funds stands in stark contrast to the network’s underlying fundamentals, such as the increasing tokenization of real-world assets and usage metrics, as highlighted by Hwang.
The current downtrend in Ethereum’s price coincides with remarks made by Vitalik Buterin, one of its co-founders. Buterin recently expressed doubts about the original vision of Layer 2 solutions and their role in Ethereum, stating that it no longer aligns with the network’s evolving needs. He pointed out that the progress of Layer 2 networks has been slower and more challenging than initially anticipated, while Layer 1 (L1) solutions have been advancing in scalability and fee reduction.
The combination of Ethereum’s market decline, outflows from ETFs, and Buterin’s commentary on Layer 2 solutions has raised concerns among investors and analysts about the future trajectory of the cryptocurrency. While the network’s fundamentals remain strong, including the growth of tokenized assets and usage metrics, the disconnect between these fundamentals and market performance is causing uncertainty and contributing to Ethereum’s current price slump.
It is clear that Ethereum is facing a challenging period, grappling with market pressures and internal considerations related to its network development. As the cryptocurrency continues to navigate these complexities, investors and stakeholders will be closely monitoring its price movements and strategic decisions to assess its long-term prospects in the ever-changing landscape of the digital asset market.
