IDX to make all MSCI-requested data open to the public
The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) announced its decision to provide all data requested by Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) to the public. This includes details on the ownership structure of shares less than 5 percent, and it will be readily accessible on the IDX’s official website starting this February.
Jeffrey Hendrik, the Director of Development at the IDX, mentioned their commitment to transparency by ensuring that shares under 5 percent are disclosed to the public. To verify any affiliations related to these shares, the relevant issuer will also be contacted for confirmation, as stated by Jeffrey during interactions with reporters at the IDX on February 1, 2026.
Moreover, the IDX, in collaboration with the Indonesian Central Securities Depository (KSEI), plans to enhance the classification of investor types by adding more detailed categories advised by MSCI. Samsul Hidayat, the President Director of KSEI, shared that the existing nine investor types based on the Single Investor Identification (SID) will be subdivided into 15 subtypes. These adjustments will particularly focus on the corporate (CP) and others (OT) categories to provide a more refined classification system.
MSCI expressed concerns about the lack of transparency regarding Indonesia’s share ownership structure, emphasizing the need for improvements to support the assessment of free float and investability of Indonesian stocks. To address these issues, MSCI has temporarily frozen share adjustments to urge more reliable and detailed information on share ownership structures, aiming to monitor high share ownership concentrations efficiently.
According to MSCI, despite some enhancements to the float data of the Indonesia Stock Exchange, fundamental issues regarding investability remain due to insufficient transparency in share ownership structures and concerns about coordinated trading behaviors impacting price formation. These concerns illustrate the crucial need for accessible and detailed data on share ownership structures for investors, ultimately supporting better market assessment and informed decision-making.
In response to MSCI’s announcement and continued concerns, the IDX is taking proactive steps to ensure data transparency and meet investor expectations for clearer ownership information. These efforts not only benefit investors but also contribute to a more transparent and accountable stock market environment in Indonesia.
