Former Fed ‘hawk’ Kevin Warsh now aligns with Trump – Japan Today

Kevin Warsh has been chosen by President Donald Trump to lead the Federal Reserve, succeeding current chairman Jerome Powell. Warsh, a former Fed official, was initially known for his opposition to inflation but has shifted his views to align with the Trump administration’s call for aggressive interest rate cuts.

Trump’s decision to nominate Warsh comes after months of criticism towards Powell, with the President referring to him as a “moron”. These attacks have sparked concerns among investors about the Fed’s independence and the potential impact on the economy’s inflation rates.

Among the contenders for the Fed chair position, Warsh emerged as the top choice over Fed Governor Christopher Waller, BlackRock’s Rick Rieder, and Trump’s economic adviser Kevin Hassett. Warsh previously served as a Fed governor from 2006 to 2011, following a career as a mergers and acquisitions banker at Morgan Stanley. He later transitioned to the White House, serving as a White House economic policy adviser during George W. Bush’s administration.

During his tenure at the Fed, Warsh collaborated closely with Ben Bernanke on policy responses during the 2008 financial crisis. Known as an inflation “hawk,” he prioritized stable prices and low inflation by advocating for tighter monetary policy and higher interest rates. However, he resigned from his position in 2011, echoing his skepticism towards some of the Fed’s actions, including interest rate cuts.

While initially critical of the Fed’s policies, Warsh has since supported Trump’s positions, expressing concerns that the central bank has strayed from its monetary policy mission. He believes that the Fed’s decisions are hindering the U.S. economy’s growth potential. In a speech last year, Warsh endorsed interest rate cuts as a means to boost economic growth, despite concerns about the impacts of Trump’s tariffs on inflation.

Warsh’s appointment to the Fed is subject to confirmation by the US Senate, where he will face scrutiny from Republican lawmakers. Additionally, concerns surrounding Powell’s probe, initiated by US prosecutors, remain a critical factor affecting the confirmation process.

With his background in finance, government service, and alignment with Trump’s policies, Warsh’s leadership at the Federal Reserve will likely shape the future trajectory of monetary policy and economic stability in the United States.
