SES expands EGNOS GEO-1 satellite service for precise navigation in Europe

SES has extended the EGNOS GEO-1 satellite service agreement with the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) through 2030, with the possibility of extending until 2032. This extension aims to continue providing high-precision navigation services for aviation and other critical users across Europe.

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) plays a crucial role in enhancing the accuracy and reliability of satellite positioning signals. By supporting aircraft in landing during low-visibility conditions and enabling more efficient route planning, EGNOS helps reduce fuel burn and CO₂ emissions. The service is based on Europe’s regional Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS), which enhances the accuracy and reliability of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals, including GPS. Apart from aviation, EGNOS is also beneficial for maritime navigation and precision-driven agriculture, contributing to operational efficiency and sustainability by reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

SES will continue operating an EGNOS hosted payload on its SES-5 satellite and managing the ground segment from its facilities in Europe under the extended GEO-1 contract. This commitment ensures a robust EGNOS space segment that is prepared for the transition to its next version and the development of new services, while maintaining high-precision navigation for aviation and other critical users in Europe.

Rodrigo da Costa, Executive Director of EUSPA, emphasized the significance of the EGNOS extension in providing secure and sustainable navigation solutions for the region. Philippe Glaesener, Senior Vice President of Global Government at SES, highlighted the role of EGNOS as a cornerstone of Europe’s aviation and navigation applications. He expressed SES’s dedication to advancing satellite-based services that enable efficient and reliable air transportation services across Europe, benefiting millions of users and operators.

The collaboration between SES and EUSPA underscores their joint commitment to delivering resilient satellite solutions for critical infrastructures. This partnership reflects a broader mission of leveraging space to make a positive impact on people’s lives. By combining multi-orbit satellites with a global terrestrial network, SES provides seamless connectivity and high-quality video content to support governments, businesses, and individuals worldwide.

With a track record of innovation and industry leadership, SES is well-positioned to drive meaningful change in the global space ecosystem. Headquartered in Luxembourg and listed on the Paris and Luxembourg stock exchanges, SES continues to shape the future of communications and connectivity. The company’s forward-looking statements emphasize its dedication to delivering cutting-edge space solutions that empower customers and drive impact beyond traditional coverage.
