Delta agrees to purchase 31 Airbus A330 and A350 widebody jets
40 A330-900neos. The carrier also operates around 40 A350-900s, with plans to receive another 40 in the future. This recent agreement follows Delta’s previous order for Boeing 787s, which included 30 firm orders for 787-10s and an additional 30 options. These new jets are intended to replace the aging 767s in Delta’s fleet.
As the demand for international travel continues to rise, major US airlines are increasing their long-haul capabilities. Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, and United Airlines are all looking to expand their widebody and long-range narrowbody fleets to meet this growing demand. Delta’s partnership with Airbus has been longstanding, and the addition of these widebody aircraft is expected to result in long-term growth and cost benefits for the airline.
The total aircraft orderbook for Delta now consists of 232 narrowbodies and 85 widebodies. The latest agreement with Airbus involves the purchase of both the A330-900s and A350-900s, powered by Rolls-Royce turbofans – the Trent 7000 and the Trent XWB-84, respectively. Delta has also signed a long-term agreement with Rolls-Royce for engine servicing, ensuring operational efficiency and maintenance longevity for the new aircraft.
In line with Delta’s existing capital expenditure and capacity targets, the airline has secured long-term financing for a significant portion of the purchase price of each aircraft. This strategic move aligns with Delta’s vision for sustained growth and efficiency in the long-haul segment of its operations. The order is set to commence deliveries in 2029, reflecting Delta’s forward-looking approach to fleet upgrades and modernization.
The addition of these new widebody jets underscores Delta’s commitment to providing top-notch service to its passengers and staying competitive in the global aviation market. With a focus on enhancing its long-haul capabilities, Delta aims to continue meeting the evolving needs of travelers while optimizing its operational efficiency and economic performance. This aircraft purchase represents a significant investment in Delta’s future and underscores the airline’s dedication to remaining a leader in the industry.
