Retail IPOs making a comeback after years of stagnation – Market analyst

Retail-focused Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) are making a comeback after a hiatus, indicating a resurgence in the public markets for brand debuts. Two consumer-facing companies, Bob’s Discount Furniture and Once Upon a Farm, are forging ahead with their plans to go public in the US.

According to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings, Bob’s Discount Furniture is aiming to raise up to $370 million with a valuation of approximately $2.5 billion. On the other hand, Once Upon a Farm, an organic children’s snacks brand co-founded by Jennifer Garner and John Foraker, the former CEO of Annie’s Inc., is targeting up to $209 million, valuing the company at about $764 million at the top of its range. These offerings are slated to be priced in February, positioning the companies at the forefront of notable retail-oriented IPOs for the year.

Bob’s Discount Furniture operates over 200 stores across 26 states, with plans for expansion to more than 500 locations by 2035. Once Upon a Farm products are stocked in over 3,200 stores, including major retailers like Target, Whole Foods, Kroger, and Walmart.

The IPO market for consumer-facing brands has experienced a freeze since 2021, when the category raised $17.4 billion, as reported by Bloomberg. Since then, total issuance has only reached $15.6 billion. These recent deals indicate that private equity and venture-backed firms are once again testing investor interest, despite the challenging macroeconomic environment, especially for low- and middle-income consumers.

Both Bob’s Discount Furniture and Once Upon a Farm have leveraged unique and creative marketing strategies to stand out. Bob’s Discount Furniture has embarked on bold campaigns like “Dare to Compare,” encouraging consumers to compare its products against competitors based on price, quality, and features. They have even launched a web-based reality series called “Till Décor Do Us Part” to increase brand awareness. On the other hand, Once Upon a Farm has benefited from high-visibility brand storytelling, with Jennifer Garner endorsing the products in Capital One commercials, creating moments that strengthen brand identity.

The successful IPOs of these two companies suggest that brands with a clear market position, scalability, and distinctive marketing approaches may find success in the public markets, despite investor caution. These developments highlight the importance of creative branding and differentiation in connecting with consumers and investors alike.
