Amazon settles ‘no hassle returns’ lawsuit, agrees to pay customers $309 million
in 2023, a lawsuit accused Amazon of mishandling returns and failing to issue refunds as promised. The class action lawsuit highlighted that Amazon, despite promoting “free, no hassle returns,” frequently neglected to issue refunds to customers who returned items or charged them erroneously. Additionally, the lawsuit claimed that Amazon was aware of these return issues, causing significant financial losses for consumers. To address these concerns, Amazon has proposed a settlement worth over $1 billion, comprising $600 million in refunds and $309.5 million in payments to affected customers.
Following an internal review in 2025, Amazon acknowledged that a small group of returns did not receive proper refunds due to incomplete payments or verification issues related to returned items. Consequently, Amazon started issuing refunds in 2025 for these specific cases and has agreed to provide additional compensation and refunds to eligible customers in accordance with the settlement terms. While Amazon has committed $363 million towards enhancing its return and refund processes, the company has denied any wrongdoing in the matter. Representatives for the class participating in the lawsuit have indicated that the proposed settlement will likely result in a complete recovery, including interest, for every member involved.
In response to the lawsuit and settlement, Amazon spokesperson Maxine Tagay stated that Amazon identified discrepancies in a subset of returns where refunds were not issued correctly due to payment processing errors or verification issues of returned items. Consequently, Amazon took steps to rectify these discrepancies by initiating refunds and providing further compensation to eligible customers as outlined in the settlement agreement.
Moreover, in addition to this settlement, Amazon is also obligated to pay $2.5 billion to settle a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit accusing the company of misleading customers into signing up for Prime memberships under false pretenses. Individuals affected by these alleged practices are encouraged to file claims to receive compensation. As of now, the proposed settlement is pending approval by US District Court Judge Jamal Whitehead.
To address the issues raised in the lawsuit and enhance customer trust and satisfaction, Amazon has committed significant financial resources to rectify any discrepancies in its return and refund practices. By acknowledging the challenges in its return processing system and taking steps to address them, Amazon aims to improve transparency, accountability, and customer service moving forward. The proposed settlement represents a substantial commitment by Amazon to uphold its promise of “no hassle returns” and ensure that customers receive fair treatment in all transactions.
