US invests $1.6 billion in USA Rare Earth for stake in domestic mineral supply boost
The U.S. Commerce Department recently unveiled plans to invest around $1.6 billion in USA Rare Earth, potentially giving the government a 16% stake in the company through exercised warrants. This move is outlined as a strategic step in the Trump administration’s efforts to curtail dependency on Chinese mineral imports by nurturing a Western supply chain. Despite shares being priced at $17.17 per share as per the agreement, stock prices surged by over 21% to $30 during early trading post the SEC filing.
The Commerce Department’s part in the deal involves extending a hefty $1.3 billion loan to USA Rare Earth under the CHIPS and Science Act, supplemented by an additional $277 million in direct federal funding. In return, the U.S. government anticipates receiving 16.1 million common shares and 17.6 million warrants from the company. Should these warrants be fully exercised, the federal government could secure an ownership stake ranging from 8% to 16% in USA Rare Earth. The main focus of this substantial federal investment centers around supporting two key infrastructure initiatives: the establishment of a mine at the Round Top rare earth deposit in Texas and the erection of a permanent magnet manufacturing facility in Stillwater, Oklahoma. These undertakings aim to forge a comprehensive U.S. supply chain for rare earths, which are pivotal minerals applied across various sectors like defense, electric vehicles, and semiconductors.
Rare earth elements represent a critical component in contemporary technologies; however, the U.S. has historically leaned heavily on China for their supply. Establishing domestic production capabilities is crucial in enhancing national security and reducing vulnerability to foreign sourcing. The federal backing for USA Rare Earth is geared toward fortifying the country’s position in the global rare earth market by bolstering its local mining and manufacturing capacities.
Moving forward, the allocation of substantial funds by the U.S. government underscores a committed effort to strengthen the nation’s self-reliance in critical mineral production. This strategic partnership with USA Rare Earth signifies a pivotal stride in elevating the country’s standing in the rare earth industry and shoring up its economic and strategic competitiveness on the global stage.
