SEBI to establish committee to enhance regulation for mutual fund distributors and investment advisors

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has announced plans to establish a working committee to enhance the regulatory framework overseeing mutual fund distributors (MFDs) and investment advisors (IAs). This committee will delve into critical matters like the extent of advice, regulatory intersections, compliance alignment, and the licensing structure applicable to MFDs and IAs.

The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) has put forward nominations for members to participate in this committee to ensure comprehensive representation across the industry. The list of nominees includes representatives from mutual fund distributor associations, individual distributors, and AMFI officials.

Some of the MFD association nominees include representatives from All Mutual Fund Distributors Welfare Association (AMDWA), ICAA, Foundation of Independent Financial Associates (FIFA), and MFD Galaxy. In addition to the association representatives, various individual MFD nominees like Ranjan Simanchal Panigrahi, S. Ganesh Ramakrishnan, and Niraj Kumar Sawa have also been proposed.

Sonali Pandit has been nominated by AMFI to represent the industry on the working committee. This move comes as a response to the longstanding industry request for clearer delineations regarding regulatory boundaries between distributors and advisors, as well as more viable compliance standards.

With the formation of this committee, stakeholders anticipate having a structured platform for fruitful discussions that could potentially trigger significant regulatory enhancements within India’s mutual fund distribution sector. It is hoped that this initiative will create more clarity around regulatory mandates, fostering a more conducive environment for growth and compliance in the industry.
