Former BlackRock lawyer appointed as new general counsel by SEC
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has recently appointed Russell McGranahan as its new general counsel to oversee the legal function of the market regulator. McGranahan takes over from Jeffrey Finnell, who will continue at the commission as deputy general counsel. McGranahan’s previous experience includes serving as general counsel of the US General Services Administration (GSA) and as general counsel of Focus Financial Partners, a wealth management firm. He also spent nine years at BlackRock in various roles such as managing director, M&A Counsel, and corporate secretary.
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins expressed his excitement about recruiting McGranahan, highlighting his extensive experience as a securities and M&A lawyer. Atkins expects McGranahan to utilize his skills to address various priorities, including strengthening capital markets and advancing the rulemaking agenda.
Meanwhile, First Citizens BancShares announced the retirement of Lorie Rupp, who served as EVP and chief risk officer for 13 years. Frank Holding, chairman and CEO of First Citizens BancShares, praised Rupp for her exceptional leadership and strategic insights. Tom Eklund, the current treasurer and a 20-year veteran of the company, will succeed Rupp as the chief risk officer in June. Eklund’s expertise in managing capital and liquidity risk aligns with the bank’s strategic objectives.
In other corporate moves, Frontier Communications confirmed the departure of its chief legal and regulatory officer, Mark Nielsen, following the company’s acquisition by Verizon Communications. Nielsen’s exit, along with other resignations, was a result of the merger and not due to any disagreements with the company. Stamper Oil & Gas, a TSX-listed company, appointed Kevin Ma as the chief financial officer and corporate secretary. Ma’s background in capital markets strategy, corporate finance, and investor relations will be valuable as the company pursues its growth strategy.
Leidos recently promoted Henrique Canarim to the role of corporate secretary, VP, and senior assistant general counsel. Canarim will play a crucial role in advising Leidos’ board of directors and executive leadership on corporate governance and legal strategies. At NatWest Group, Keiran Foad has departed from the role of group chief risk officer, and Sean Pilcher has assumed the position on an interim basis while a search for a permanent successor is underway. Pilcher brings a wealth of experience from senior roles within NatWest Group.
