GameStop shutting down Maryland stores, check out list of closures.
GameStop is closing several stores across the United States, including various locations in Maryland. The closure news comes from a compiled, although unconfirmed, list of stores that have been put together by customers, employees, and in-store signage of the video game retailer. The impacted stores in Maryland are situated in Baltimore, Ellicott City, Essex, Gambrills, Salisbury, Severna Park, and Westminster. Reports indicate that GameStop has shuttered close to 600 stores over the past year in response to ongoing financial struggles.
As a part of its cost-cutting measures, the retailer is set to close around 300 more stores this month alone. Amid these closures, GameStop has laid out a compensation package valued at $35 billion for its CEO Ryan Cohen. However, this package is contingent upon Cohen being able to revitalize the company by increasing GameStop’s market value by more than ten times. The current stock value of GameStop has plummeted significantly, down 80% from its all-time highs in 2021, leading to a drastic decrease in revenue. This strategic maneuver mirrors a move made by Elon Musk at Tesla.
The primary reason behind GameStop’s decision to close stores is rooted in the substantial revenue losses the company has incurred over the years. As more players in the gaming community opt to make their purchases online, retail sales have taken a significant hit. The introduction of Ryan Cohen as CEO in 2021 marked a pivotal moment for the company, as GameStop started to invest heavily in cryptocurrencies in an effort to pivot away from traditional retail operations. While the stock value of GameStop stood at approximately $1.3 billion in 2021, it has now climbed to around $9.3 billion, as per an SEC filing.
Although there hasn’t been an official confirmation regarding the closure of specific GameStop locations in New Jersey, the company website does list some stores as “closed.” Moreover, reports from signage, emails, social media posts, as well as information from employees and online resources, suggest that certain GameStop stores in New Jersey are either closed or slated for closure in January 2026. Among the stores included in this list are locations in Baltimore, MD – Perring Plaza, 1991 E. Joppa Rd, Baltimore, MD – Parkside S.C., 5114 Sinclair Ln, Ellicott City, MD – St. Johns Plaza, 9150 Baltimore National Pike, and Essex, MD – Middlesex S.C., 1228 Eastern.
