GameStop closes more than 400 stores nationwide
GameStop, a well-known video game retailer, has recently made the decision to close down more than 400 stores across the United States. This strategic move is part of the company’s efforts to reduce costs and streamline operations in response to changing market conditions.
According to a blog that monitors GameStop’s store closures, a total of 410 stores have already been shut down or are currently in the process of closing as of January 10. Additionally, there are reports indicating that another 11 locations will soon follow suit, further consolidating the company’s physical footprint.
These closures come as no surprise, considering GameStop’s recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in December 2025. The filing hinted at the company’s plans to shut down a substantial number of stores in the fiscal year 2025 as part of its restructuring efforts. Furthermore, the SEC filing also disclosed that GameStop’s CEO, Ryan Cohen, could potentially receive stock options valued at up to $35 billion if he can successfully elevate the retailer’s market capitalization to $100 billion.
While the blog tracking store closures primarily focuses on the US market, the SEC filing also alluded to GameStop’s intentions to downsize its international operations. The company is contemplating reducing its presence in various European countries and Canada as part of its broader initiative to reshape its global footprint.
Despite experiencing a significant surge in market value in 2021, GameStop has faced challenges in defining its brand identity and navigating the evolving landscape of the video game industry. Notable failed ventures, such as a crypto locker and an NFT marketplace, have highlighted the company’s struggles to adapt to changing consumer preferences and market dynamics.
The store closures signify GameStop’s commitment to implementing a more focused and efficient business model moving forward. By consolidating its physical presence and reevaluating its global operations, the company aims to position itself for long-term success and sustainable growth in a rapidly changing retail landscape.
