Disable Gmail’s Gemini AI with 2 Simple Steps

Another day, another update in another essential app that may require your attention to turn off. For Gmail users, there’s an automatic opt-in that cybersecurity experts claim may allow Google access to your email data, including personal and work messages and attachments, for training AI models. If you’re concerned about this data sharing, adjusting your settings is essential.

Engineer Dave Jones recently shared a warning on social media: “IMPORTANT message for everyone using Gmail. You have been automatically OPTED IN to allow Gmail to access all your private messages & attachments to train AI models. You have to manually turn off Smart Features in the Setting menu in TWO locations.”

Although users are automatically opted in, you have the option to opt-out and prevent your data from being shared without your consent. Companies are eager to see returns on investments in AI technology, with language models running out of human-generated data to train on. Tools like AI assistants that take meeting notes could potentially passively gather data from users, even in work environments, as previously reported by HuffPost.

According to Google’s privacy policy, the company uses information to enhance services, develop new products, features, and technologies, benefiting users and the public. However, a proposed class-action lawsuit against Google alleges that the company “secretly” activated Gemini, providing access to all communication history, including every email and attachment in users’ Gmail accounts.

Google has refuted these claims, stating that they do not use Gmail content to train the Gemini AI model and are transparent about any changes in terms of service and policies. Despite this, concerns about AI usage remain among Americans, with the Pew Research Center reporting that six in ten individuals share this worry.

To disable Gmail’s AI-training opt-in, users must navigate to settings on desktop and unselect “Smart features” under the General tab. Additionally, managing workplace smart feature settings allows users to toggle features on and off in Google Workspace and other products.

Unfortunately, opting out of AI features may result in the loss of useful Gmail functionalities such as spell-check, grammar check, smart compose, and automatic email filtering. Nevertheless, for many users concerned about privacy, sacrificing these features is a small price to pay to protect their data.

In conclusion, maintaining control over AI usage in everyday life is crucial, and users are encouraged to adjust their settings to prevent their information from being shared without explicit consent. Remember to review and adjust your settings in both desktop and mobile versions to ensure optimal privacy protection.
