Toyota Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Faulty Transmissions

Toyota is currently facing a class action lawsuit over alleged issues with its eight-speed automatic transmission. The lawsuit initiated by dissatisfied Toyota owner James LeBoutheller from Nevada, targets models such as the 2017-2024 Camry and more. The lawsuit asserts that the transmission is prone to premature failures, which greatly affects long-term durability and resale values.

The legal complaint filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas pinpointed two key defects within the UA80 eight-speed automatic transmission employed in several Toyota vehicles. First, the lawsuit argues that there is a design flaw causing excessive heat buildup inside the transmission, leading to the burning of transmission fluid. This flaw results in premature transmission failures, stalling, and potentially dangerous driving conditions. The second defect is attributed to improper shift programming, which prompts premature upshifts and torque converter clutch engagements. These programming errors accelerate the deterioration of the transmission system.

The lawsuit revolves around LeBoutheller’s personal experience with his 2020 Toyota Camry XSE purchased from a Nevada dealership. Around 80,000 miles, LeBoutheller reported significant noise coming from the transmission assembly, but his dealer assured him that everything was functioning normally. However, at 125,000 miles, upon experiencing similar noise issues, his vehicle was held by the dealer for diagnoses where aluminum particles were found in the transmission fluid. The dealer concluded that a replacement transmission was necessary, with Toyota agreeing to cover the cost of a new gearbox, whereas LeBoutheller would be responsible for the installation expenses.

The lawsuit encompasses many Toyota and Lexus models released as far back as 2017. If the class action proceeds, it could potentially involve millions of vehicles. LeBoutheller’s lawsuit references numerous complaints from other owners regarding transmission issues filed with the NHTSA. It highlights a widespread concern about the transmission failure risks affecting these vehicle models.
