Grayscale submits S-1 for Bittensor ETF, focused on $3B TAO market and Decentralized AI growth.
llion tokens, reflecting the scarcity model employed by Bitcoin. By the end of September 2025, there were around 10 million TAO tokens in circulation, with daily trading volumes reaching approximately $42 million, and the market value exceeding $3 billion, placing it among the top 40 digital assets globally. This highlights the significant growth and recognition of TAO within the digital asset space.
The proposed GTAO ETF aims to operate as a passive investment portfolio, mirroring the value of TAO held by the Trust while minimizing operational costs. The ETF will be traded in blocks of 10,000 shares known as “Baskets,” with Authorized Participants able to create or redeem shares through in-kind TAO transfers or approved cash orders. The ETF will be custodied by BitGo Trust Company, with Coinbase Custody joining the effort before listing, and Coinbase serving as the Trust’s prime broker. This mechanism is designed to ensure that the ETF’s market price closely aligns with its net asset value, avoiding the premiums or discounts often associated with previous crypto trusts.
Bittensor plays a crucial role in the emerging AI-crypto landscape, functioning as a decentralized marketplace for machine intelligence. Participants are incentivized with TAO tokens to submit valuable AI models and computational outputs to the network. The protocol evaluates and ranks these models based on performance and usefulness, distributing TAO rewards accordingly. All transactions are securely recorded on the Subtensor blockchain, shaping a crypto-economic framework to incentivize open coordination in the AI industry, moving away from monopolistic structures towards a decentralized exchange of AI value.
While the Trust’s governing documents allow for staking, regulatory constraints currently prevent Grayscale from staking TAO. Despite this limitation, potential future staking activities could significantly enhance returns by introducing additional yield to price exposure. This reiterates the ETF’s primary focus as a vehicle for price tracking without the inclusion of staking rewards, unless disclosed otherwise by the SEC in the future.
Grayscale’s strategic move to offer the GTAO ETF for the regulated U.S. market signifies a broader trend of institutional interest in decentralized AI assets. By tapping into the growing significance of projects like Bittensor within the crypto-AI space, Grayscale aims to provide investors with exposure to innovative technologies and emerging markets while navigating regulatory requirements to ensure compliance and security. The proposed ETF emphasizes the potential for decentralized AI tokens like TAO to attract institutional attention, diversifying investment opportunities and fostering growth in the digital asset ecosystem.
