Government allocates funding to rebuild disaster-affected Sumatra

The Indonesian government has designated funding to reconstruct regions in Sumatra that have been impacted by natural disasters. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa disclosed that a portion of the 2026 state budget has been allocated for this purpose, with an estimated financial requirement of approximately Rp51 trillion, lower than the previous projection of nearly Rp60 trillion. Purbaya expressed these details during a virtual coordination meeting of the Post-Disaster Recovery Task Force with various governmental bodies and affected local leaders in Jakarta.

Purbaya clarified that a part of this budget has already been earmarked through the reallocation of funds. Still, the exact distribution among ministries, agencies, and other state entities will be determined later following assessments conducted by the government. He emphasized that he is awaiting recommendations from the task force or the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) in adherence to the directives issued by the president.

The Finance Minister ensured that appropriate financial resources are in place for disaster response and recovery efforts in Sumatra, without the need to divert funds from other areas such as the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG). He outlined a total budget of Rp60 trillion set aside for disaster response, with approximately Rp51 trillion proposed for the post-flood recovery operations in Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra.

Purbaya affirmed the government’s steadfast commitment to executing the MBG program as originally planned, underscoring that there are no intentions to disrupt or modify the budget allocation for this initiative. The Finance Minister made it clear that the current disaster funding needs have been accommodated within pre-existing budget figures.
