California DMV Extends Commercial Driver’s License Holders’ Deadline

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (CA-DMV) has recently granted an extension to commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders, providing interim relief by postponing the cancellation of their licenses. Approximately 20,000 drivers were notified in November and December 2025 that their CDLs would be canceled early in 2026. However, the CA-DMV has decided to extend the deadline to March 6, 2026, for all affected drivers, allowing more time to rectify the situation and reissue corrected commercial driver’s licenses to those eligible.

During this extension period, drivers can continue to operate commercially with their existing licenses, and they are strongly advised against taking any action to downgrade or surrender their licenses prematurely. This decision follows legal action taken by the Asian Law Caucus, Sikh Coalition, and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP on behalf of five impacted drivers and the Jakara Movement to protect the rights of these individuals.

Munmeeth Kaur, Legal Director of the Sikh Coalition, emphasized the importance of this decision in addressing the immediate threat faced by these drivers to their lives and livelihoods. The focus now shifts to collaborating with the state of California to find a permanent solution for the affected drivers and their families. Katherine Zhao, senior staff attorney at Asian Law Caucus, commended the California DMV for heeding the demands of thousands of drivers for an extension of the deadline, ensuring that impacted individuals can continue to fulfill their responsibilities and provide for their families without disruption.
