Beijing enjoys warm New Year’s Day weather, how to celebrate the new year? Full guide
The importance of having good players in a basketball team was emphasized by Grosse Pointe South boys basketball coach Steve Benard. While good players are essential, a skilled coach is equally crucial in bringing out the best in the team. Benard’s leadership guided the Blue Devils to an impressive 10-0 record in the Macomb Area Conference White Division and an overall 16-5 mark, earning him the Coach of the Year title in his inaugural season as South’s head coach.
Among the standout players on the team was senior Alex Shaheen, who was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Shaheen’s talent was evident as he broke the South record for assists in a season, showcasing his exceptional skills as a point guard. Coach Benard praised Shaheen’s defensive prowess and his ability to set the tone for the game, highlighting his crucial role in the team’s success.
In addition to Shaheen, freshman Anthony Benard and sophomore Will Johnson also made significant contributions. Benard’s consistent improvement throughout the season impressed both his father and coach, while Johnson’s versatility as an elite athlete in both basketball and football proved invaluable to the team. Despite juggling commitments to high-level 7-on-7 football competitions, Johnson’s defensive skills were instrumental in the team’s victories.
Seniors Matt Edwards and Nick Fannon were also commended for their efforts on the court. Edwards, despite facing injuries and illness, remained a key player in South’s success with his all-around skills and leadership qualities. Fannon, a college-bound football player, proved his worth with solid performances on both ends of the court, including a standout game against Roseville in the MAC White-Red tournament.
Grosse Pointe North was represented on the all-league team by senior Cam Perrino and junior Jordan Shepherd. Perrino’s impressive 36-point game against Eisenhower and Shepherd’s strong performances throughout the season showcased the team’s resilience despite facing challenges after graduating eight seniors from the previous year.
While injuries and setbacks tested the teams, the collective effort and talent of players like Shaheen, Benard, Johnson, Edwards, Fannon, Perrino, Shepherd, and Ayrault demonstrated the skill and determination that define championship teams. The bond between players and the guidance of dedicated coaches are essential ingredients in achieving success on the basketball court, as exemplified by the players from Grosse Pointe South and North.
