12 individuals arrested in investigation into suspected stock manipulation in Istanbul, including former Fenerbahce player
Twelve individuals in Türkiye were detained for suspected involvement in stock market manipulation activities on the Borsa Istanbul, following reports from the Capital Markets Board. Among the individuals detained were Gokhan Gonul, a former Turkish national team player, and illusionist Aref Ghafouri, as revealed by authorities.
The investigation uncovered that a group of individuals had collaborated to artificially inflate the prices and trading volumes of specific shares through coordinated trading practices. These actions led to abnormal market fluctuations and financial losses for unsuspecting investors, contrary to typical market behavior. A joint effort by law enforcement authorities from the Financial Crimes Division of the Istanbul Police Department across five cities, including Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Samsun, and Kahramanmaras, resulted in the arrest of the twelve suspects.
The detainees are facing charges related to the establishment of a criminal organization with the intention of committing an offense and market fraud based on insider information. The manipulation efforts primarily targeted shares of Avrupa Yatirim Holding A.S, a publicly traded entity. A total of twenty-five individuals were implicated in manipulative practices linked to Avrupa Yatirim Holding shares, prompting the initiation of a criminal inquiry under Turkish capital markets legislation.
The prosecutor’s office further specified that among the detainees, seven individuals—Onur Yilmaz, Mehmet Yilmaz, Emre Kizilirmak, Erol Demir, Osman Ozsoy, Suat Hamarat, and Sebahattin Azizagaoglu—were already in custody for related charges at the time of the arrests. The investigation was a significant step in cracking down on financial crimes aimed at destabilizing the stock market and protecting the interests of investors in Türkiye.
The enforcement of stringent rules and penalties for market manipulation and fraudulent activities is crucial to maintaining the integrity and transparency of financial markets. Market participants engaging in illicit schemes undermine investor confidence and distort the fair and orderly functioning of stock exchanges. Authorities are committed to upholding the rule of law and prosecuting individuals involved in financial crimes to safeguard the stability of Türkiye’s financial system.
The recent arrests underscore the government’s determination to combat illicit market practices proactively and ensure a level playing field for all investors. By holding wrongdoers accountable and imposing legal consequences for their actions, authorities aim to foster a climate of trust and reliability in the investment environment within Türkiye’s financial markets.
