Netflix considering making a bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, says report
Netflix is reportedly considering expanding its portfolio by bidding on Warner Bros. Discovery, potentially acquiring iconic franchises like Superman, Batman, Harry Potter, and Barbie. The streaming giant has hired Moelis & Co. to facilitate a potential acquisition offer for Warner Bros. Discovery amid reports of multiple parties showing interest in the media company. Netflix has been granted access to Warner Bros. Discovery’s financials as part of the due diligence process for a possible acquisition bid.
While Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has indicated that the company is not keen on owning traditional media networks, including Warner Bros. Discovery’s CNN, TBS, HGTV, and Food Network, the streaming service is reportedly exploring the acquisition of certain assets within Warner Bros. Discovery. Sarandos mentioned that Netflix can afford to be selective with its mergers and acquisitions but emphasized that no specific asset is indispensable to Netflix’s overall business goals.
Paramount Skydance has also expressed interest in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, making three unsuccessful bids for the media company. Comcast is another major player eyeing a potential bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, particularly focusing on the studios and streaming components. The bar for a major merger or acquisition remains high for Comcast, as the company is awaiting the completion of the spinoff of its linear cable channels into Versant later this year.
Warner Bros.’ film studios have recently seen box-office success with titles such as “Superman,” “A Minecraft Movie,” “Sinners,” “Final Destination Bloodlines,” “F1: The Movie,” and “Weapons.” On the television side, Warner Bros. Television has produced popular shows like “Running Point,” “You,” “Maid,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Shrinking,” and “The Voice,” including collaborations with Netflix.
If Netflix secures an acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, it could potentially house a vast media library comprising classics like “Casablanca,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Goodfellas,” “Unforgiven,” and “The Shining.” The move could significantly expand Netflix’s content library and appeal to a broader audience with iconic franchises and timeless titles. Netflix’s reported interest in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery comes at a time when major players in the entertainment industry are making strategic moves to solidify their positions in the media landscape.
