Executive shake-ups at Portillo’s, Qdoba, and Ruby Slipper: new CMOs appointed

Mike Ellis will be stepping down from his position as Portillo’s chief development officer, effective Oct. 31, as stated in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company did not disclose the reason for his departure but confirmed that he would receive severance benefits.

In other recent executive movements in the restaurant industry, Michele Brogioni has been appointed as the new executive chef at Danny Meyer’s Manhatta restaurant. Brogioni brings a wealth of culinary experience from various kitchens worldwide and is set to revamp the menus for the contemporary American restaurant located high above New York City’s financial district.

Ryan Russell has been elevated to the role of chief of staff for SPB Hospitality, managing a portfolio that includes Krystal, Logan’s Roadhouse, and J. Alexander’s under the guidance of new CEO G.J. Hart. With four years of experience at SPB, Russell previously served as the senior director of communications and marketing.

Jon Burke is the newly appointed chief marketing officer at Qdoba, responsible for brand storytelling, integrated marketing strategies, guest loyalty programs, digital engagement, and culinary innovation across the chain’s 825 locations. Beginning his journey with Qdoba in 2023 as vice president of national marketing, Burke brings a wealth of experience from previous roles at Jollibee Foods, Applebee’s, McDonald’s, and Del Taco. Additionally, Katy Velazquez has been promoted to vice president of culinary innovation at Qdoba, reporting directly to Burke.

Joining Houston TX Hot Chicken as the director of franchise sales, Andie Smirl will spearhead the recruitment process for operators as the chain enters its next phase of expansion. With a background in development at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop and most recently at Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, Smirl’s return to the restaurant industry with Houston TX Hot Chicken signals new growth opportunities for the brand.

Bryan Bass has taken on the role of chief marketing officer at Ruby Slipper and Ruby Sunshine, popular brunch spots originating from New Orleans with a combined presence in six states. With two decades of experience at prominent brands like MGM Resorts, Wynn Resorts, and Carver Road Hospitality, as well as launching celebrity concepts such as Goodnight Nashville with country star Jelly Roll, Bass brings a wealth of expertise to his new position.

Peter Wright has joined the Jollibee Group North America as vice president of franchising, focusing on expanding the Jollibee brand across the U.S. and Canada. With a background at Starbucks, Panera Bread, McAlister’s Deli, and Nestlé, Wright’s appointment aligns with Jollibee Group’s ambitious growth plans across the region. Jollibee Group operates 19 brands in 33 countries, with a strategic emphasis on Jollibee and Smashburger in the U.S. market.
