Settlement reached in class-action lawsuit over alleged actions of Henry Ford Macomb doctor
A recent class-action lawsuit settlement has been finalized for alleged misconduct by Dr. Oumair Aejaz at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, creating a $125 million fund for affected patients. This settlement aims to provide recovery for up to 8,200 patients who may have been victims of illicit behavior by Dr. Aejaz.
Circuit Judge James Maceroni presided over the case and approved the settlement, praising the efforts of both parties for reaching a resolution in what he called a “complicated, tragic matter.” The lead plaintiff, identified as “Jane Doe,” initiated the lawsuit against the Henry Ford Health System and its Macomb hospital after Dr. Aejaz admitted to criminal charges of molesting victims in Oakland County.
The lawsuit, filed in September 2024 by Stinar Gould Grieco & Hensley and Bailey Glasser law firms, was prompted by Aejaz’s arrest in Oakland County for sexually abusing and filming patients at various facilities. Aejaz’s wife’s cooperation led to the discovery of thousands of incriminating videos on his electronic devices, prompting legal action against him.
With the number of affected patients increasing from 5,500 to 8,200 as investigations progressed, attorneys Lannen and Stinar highlighted the broad impact of Dr. Aejaz’s actions on unsuspecting patients. The legal process addressed the need for justice for these victims and sought to provide clarity on their rights and options moving forward.
Under the terms of the settlement, Henry Ford will make two separate payments totaling $125 million to compensate victims. Initial payments of $5,000, minus legal fees, will be distributed to each potential class member, followed by additional payouts totaling $100 million depending on the nature of harm suffered. A designated “special master” will oversee the allocation of funds to different tiers of victims based on the severity of their experiences.
While some former patients have opted out of the class-action lawsuit to pursue individual complaints, the majority have expressed support for the settlement and the pursuit of justice in light of the egregious actions of Dr. Aejaz. The legal process aims to provide closure and compensation to those affected while holding accountable those responsible for the misconduct.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the community continues to grapple with the repercussions of Dr. Aejaz’s actions and seeks redress for the harm inflicted on innocent patients. The settlement represents a significant step towards addressing the traumatic experiences endured by those affected and promoting healing and restitution for all involved parties.
