Lawsuit filed by Dallas County Deputies claims unpaid compensation and missing comp time

Dallas County deputies have taken legal action against the county, alleging that they are missing compensation time and pay. The lawsuit claims that some of the lost time originated from a software error and subsequent policy modifications. This longstanding issue, according to Dallas County Sheriff’s Association President Christopher Dyer, extends back over many years.

Dyer explained that the county used to require employees to work overtime, providing them with comp time in return. However, in 2023, a decision was made to eliminate a portion of this comp time without compensating the employees for the overtime they had worked over the years. The President of the Texas Municipal Police Association, Kevin Lawrence, highlighted the significant impact of this issue, stating that many officers have accumulated hundreds or even thousands of hours that the county is attempting to take away without offering any compensation.

The heart of the problem lies in how the county tracks this time, storing it in various categories. Some of this time has been misplaced due to a software malfunction, exacerbating the issue. Lawrence emphasized that the lawsuit aims to ensure that employees are paid what they rightfully deserve. He underscored the financial strain this issue places on employees, who rely on every dollar to support their families. Despite efforts to resolve this matter amicably without resorting to legal action, the pleas of these employees have been met with indifference.

Lawrence expressed hope that the county will seek a resolution, rectifying the errors that led to this situation. Dallas County responded minimally to inquiries about the lawsuit, with a spokesperson stating that Judge Clay Jenkins does not comment on pending litigation.

This legal dispute underscores the critical nature of fair compensation for employees who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting their community. It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding labor laws and practices that ensure employees are justly compensated for their hard work and dedication. The outcome of this lawsuit will not only impact the affected deputies but also sets a precedent for how public entities handle employee compensation discrepancies in the future. This lawsuit serves as a testament to the vigilance of the deputies in seeking fair treatment and just compensation for their service. And it sheds light on the broader issue of respecting and valuing the labor of those who uphold law and order within our communities.
