Congressman Cleo Fields refutes claims of insider trading

Louisiana Congressman Cleo Fields is refuting claims of engaging in insider trading. Notably, the allegations arose after the revelation that the Democrat purchased a considerable amount of Oracle stock shortly before President Trump signed an executive order designating the technology giant a crucial role in the impending U.S. spinoff of TikTok from a Chinese company.

Fields staunchly maintains that he did not possess any privileged information that influenced his investment decisions. In his defense, Fields remarked, “There’s not a single stock that I’ve purchased because I had some inside information. And I’ve been doing this for years.” Seeking to emphasize his track record as a seasoned investor, Fields underscored that legislators commonly participate in the stock market, and he is no exception. “I’ve been trading stocks for a while, and it didn’t start when I was in Congress. And I don’t intend to stop while I’m at Congress,” expressed Fields.

Within Congress, members must adhere to stringent guidelines when reporting their stock transactions, encompassing a 45-day period for disclosure. Eclipsing this requirement, Fields voluntarily discloses all his trades within 30 days. His proactive approach includes ensuring his legal team submits reports of all transactions to the U.S. House Committee on Ethics to preempt any legal infractions. Shedding light on his comprehensive compliance, Fields iterates, “At the end of each month, I make sure that my lawyers send it over to Ethics to make sure that I’m not in any violation of the law.”

As a member of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, tasked with overseeing financial markets and the securities industry, Fields’s connection to Oracle’s role in the TikTok transaction raises questions regarding his knowledge of the deal. The report from NOTUS raises uncertainties regarding Fields’s awareness of Oracle’s involvement or whether he personally initiated the trade or acted upon advice from a financial consultant.

The allegations of insider trading against Congressman Cleo Fields underscore the scrutiny that public officials face when engaging in financial activities. Fields’s unequivocal denial coupled with his adherence to disclosure regulations presents a compelling argument against the accusation. However, the intricacies of his ties to the investment and the level of information he possessed remain subjects of speculation pending further investigation.
