Thailand creates team to enhance stock market and restore investor trust
Thailand is taking proactive steps to boost investor confidence and stimulate growth in the stock market by establishing a task force composed of key financial and regulatory bodies. The collaborative effort involves the finance ministry, the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organisations, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The announcement was made by Pornanong Budsaratragoon, the secretary-general of the SEC, during an investment conference held in Thailand on August 27.
The task force is slated to commence operations on September 15, with the primary objective of implementing strategies to enhance stock market investments, increase market liquidity, and restore trust among investors. While specific details about the proposed measures were not disclosed, the initiative underscores the urgency to revitalize market sentiment in response to the decline in Thailand’s benchmark stock index, which has experienced an 11% downturn this year. The volatility can be attributed, in part, to the uncertainty surrounding US tariff policies, prompting foreign investors to seek refuge in safe-haven assets.
Apart from external factors influencing market conditions, incidents of investment scams and fraudulent activities have dampened retail investors’ confidence. Notably, a significant investment scam was uncovered in March, involving a perpetrator known as “Doctor Boon,” which resulted in a substantial loss of 14.2 billion baht (US$438.7 million) for hundreds of investors. These incidents emphasize the critical need for legal reforms to empower regulators with enhanced enforcement capabilities. Institutional investors are advocating for strengthened regulatory oversight and enforcement mechanisms to safeguard investor interests and reinforce credibility within the stock market ecosystem.
The initiative to establish a task force reflects Thailand’s commitment to restoring investor confidence, promoting market stability, and fostering growth within the capital markets. By leveraging the collective expertise and resources of relevant stakeholders, including regulatory authorities and industry specialists, Thailand aims to address existing challenges and implement effective strategies to enhance market dynamics. The collaborative approach underscores the importance of regulatory vigilance, investor protection, and market integrity in sustaining long-term growth and resilience in the financial sector.
Through strategic coordination and concerted efforts, the task force endeavors to navigate uncertainties, mitigate risks, and capitalize on emerging opportunities to drive sustainable growth and enhance Thailand’s position as a competitive investment destination. By fostering transparency, resilience, and accountability within the financial ecosystem, Thailand aims to position itself as a robust and investor-friendly market, conducive to attracting domestic and foreign investments. The establishment of the task force signifies a proactive step towards achieving these overarching objectives and instilling confidence in the country’s capital markets.
