Tim Hodgson Ensures Future Security

The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources addressed the topic of “Securing the Future: Advancing Canada–Germany Cooperation on Transatlantic Energy Security” at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin on August 27, 2025. Minister Hodgson expressed gratitude to the Canadian Embassy for hosting the event and to the German government for its hospitality during the two days. The gathering was deemed significant as it brought into focus current global challenges faced by both Canada and Germany.

Meetings between Prime Minister Carney and Chancellor Merz, as well as Minister Hodgson and Minister Reiche, underscored the evolving partnership between Canada and Germany, emphasizing mutual security, sovereignty, and the capacity of democracies to provide for each other.

Minister Hodgson recounted the lessons learned from the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a stark reminder of the integral role of energy in national security, industry, and sovereignty. Agreements were signed between Canadian and German companies to strengthen the supply chain for essential resources like copper, rare earths, and lithium. Additionally, discussions around establishing a transatlantic hydrogen corridor and supplying Germany with Canadian LNG underscored the commitment to real projects that bolster industry, create jobs, and enhance security on both sides.

Minister Hodgson emphasized the significance of catalyzing investment through initiatives like the Building Canada Act, recognizing the pivotal role of capital allocation in driving economic growth and resilience.
