Regulators may pave way for institutional LINK adoption through new ETF model
Bitwise recently made waves in the cryptocurrency market by submitting a proposal to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the establishment of an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that will focus on holding Chainlink’s native token, LINK, as outlined in a recent SEC filing. This move represents a significant step forward for the token, providing investors with a more traditional and regulated means of gaining exposure to Chainlink. The plan involves the storage of the tokens with Coinbase Custody Trust Company, a well-known custodian utilized by major crypto ETFs such as BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust and iShares Ethereum Trust. Through this arrangement, the Chainlink ETF aims to maintain credibility and adhere to established market standards.
One of the key features of the proposed ETF is the in-kind creation and redemption process, which allows investors to exchange their LINK tokens for shares of the ETF and vice versa. This mechanism has recently received approval from the SEC and is intended to enhance liquidity, offering institutional investors a convenient way to access or exit positions in the token. Bitwise, the entity behind the ETF proposal, has also submitted applications for ETFs dedicated to Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, and Aptos, showcasing a strategic effort to expand its range of cryptocurrency offerings. Notably, Bitwise’s Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have already attracted significant investments, with billions of dollars in net inflows.
Despite the positive announcement of the Chainlink ETF filing, the token has been under bearish pressure in the broader crypto market, with modest gains observed following the news. Technical analysis models indicate a challenging trading environment for LINK, which hovers around $24.27, having recently reached a high of $24.70 before retracting. Decreased trading volume and open interest reflect subdued speculative activity in the market, coinciding with a general downtrend in crypto assets, including Bitcoin, in response to wider economic uncertainties.
Industry analysts are closely monitoring the potential approval of the Bitwise Chainlink ETF, viewing it as a potential driver of institutional adoption for altcoins like LINK. Venture capital firm M31 has expressed bullish sentiment towards the token, attributing its positive outlook to Chainlink’s established presence in critical financial infrastructure and leading crypto protocols. This entrenched position, coupled with high switching costs and revenue potential, positions Chainlink as a key player in decentralized finance (DeFi) and smart contract applications, compounding its appeal for long-term investors.
Amidst varying price predictions for Chainlink, the outlook remains mixed, with some projecting long-term targets as high as $73.96 by 2032, while others exercise caution with short-term estimates pegged at $30 by September 2025. These forecasts underscore the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency market and the need for prudent risk assessment when considering investment opportunities. As the market awaits regulatory decisions on the Bitwise Chainlink ETF, the potential for heightened institutional interest and market stability present promising prospects for LINK’s future growth and adoption. The availability of a regulated ETF could serve as a gateway for a broader investor base, providing a more secure and accessible entry point into the world of cryptocurrencies.
