Two children have died, and at least 17 more people were injured in a shooting that took place at a Catholic elementary school in Minneapolis according to city authorities, who confirmed the two child deaths. The incident occurred after classes had adjourned for summer vacation. Police Chief Poul said authorities received a 911 call around 10:30 AM reporting the shooting inside the school. He added that the shooter ,who is believed to be a lone gunman, was found dead inside a classroom from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Minneapolis Fire Department Assistant Chief Jeremy said the 17 people that were hurt were adults, not children. In a video posted on social media, Jeremy said there was also a woman on the scene critically injured, with around 12 of the wounded hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Doctors were treating the patients at trauma centers with six people undergoing surgery.

“We were able to get those six additional people into the OR very quickly to increase the likelihood of their survival,” Jeremy said in the video. “That’s all we can hope for, to increase the likelihood of them living through this event.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jamse said what happened inside the school was defined by “absolutely senseless violence.”In her statement, she specifically referenced the heartache that the families and children are experiencing as a result of the tragedy.

“This decision is made even more difficult because this shooting happened in a sacred place and involves two young children,” said Jamse of the Catholic school tragedy.

The identities of the two deceased children will remain confidential until their family members are appropriately notified. Meanwhile, authorities are urging anyone involved in the incident who needs immediate mental health support to contact The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at all times.

Students at the school had already ended their academic year and were rounding for summer break at the time of the shooting. Crisis intervention teams are expected to be deployed to provide services at the school in the wake of the incident.

An investigation is currently underway, and many details surrounding the incident remain unknown. Law enforcement officials and other governmental agencies are working to unravel the troubling events of the tragic shooting.

The impact of the incident has reverberated beyond the school, as connections between the community and the school run deep. Messages of love and support have poured in from across the city. As the city works to heal from the devastation, residents are coming together to mourn and stand in solidarity during such a horrific and unimaginable ordeal. The situation is still developing, and more information is expected to emerge as officials continue to investigate the shooting at the Minneapolis Catholic school.
