Stock Exchange Turnover Reaches Tk 10.63 Billion Despite Rise in Indices, Majority of Stocks Decline

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) experienced a robust trading day, with turnover surpassing Tk 10 billion, despite the majority of listed companies observing a decrease in their share prices. The trading day commenced on a positive note, with trading activity exhibiting bullish momentum and turnover exceeding Tk 5 billion before midday. By the conclusion of the trading session, the total turnover had reached an impressive Tk 10.63 billion, marking one of the highest figures seen in recent months.

The day concluded with all three key indices showing a positive trend. The benchmark DSEX surged by 91 points, the Shariah-based DSES saw a gain of 16 points, and the blue-chip DS30 index advanced by 48 points. Of the 394 issues traded, 150 saw an increase in value, 167 experienced a decline, and 77 remained unchanged. Despite the positive performance of the indices, the majority of A, B, and Z-category stocks ended the day in negative territory.

Within the A-category, which comprises companies with strong fundamentals and dividend-paying potential, 101 issues recorded gains, while 82 saw a decrease in value, and 37 remained unchanged. The block market witnessed transactions valued at Tk 300 million across 36 companies, with Khan Brothers emerging as a dominant player by shedding shares worth Tk 80 million. Trust Bank emerged as the top gainer on the DSE, witnessing a significant increase of 9.90%, whereas Midland Bank faced the most significant decline, losing over 9% of its value.

The positive momentum was also reflected at the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), where the main index rose by 281 points. Out of 229 issues traded at the CSE, 107 registered gains, 87 experienced a decline, and 35 remained unchanged. However, the turnover at the CSE dropped to Tk 110 million compared to the previous day’s Tk 230 million. DBH Finance led the CSE with a gain of 10%, while Midland Bank found itself at the bottom, witnessing a decrease of over 8%.

In conclusion, the DSE and CSE exhibited positive trends with increased turnover and gains across key indices. Despite the overall positive momentum, a majority of stocks, especially in the A, B, and Z-categories, finished the day in the red. Investors will continue to monitor market dynamics closely as they navigate through the fluctuations in stock prices and trading volumes.
