Sphere Entertainment progresses with expansion plans in Abu Dhabi – Gambling News

Sphere Entertainment is moving beyond its Las Vegas roots with a significant deal to introduce its unique venue concept to the Middle East. Recently finalizing an agreement with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) on July 25, Sphere Entertainment Group is set to construct and operate Sphere Abu Dhabi.

The forthcoming Abu Dhabi venue will closely mirror the original Las Vegas Sphere, a massive 20,000-seat facility that opened in 2023. The SEC filing outlines the terms of the agreement, with DCT securing exclusive rights to develop additional Sphere locations in the Middle East and North Africa over the next decade post-Abu Dhabi launch. This partnership marks Sphere’s transition to a franchise business model, where regional partners will finance and manage local venues under a licensing agreement encompassing Sphere’s innovative technology, content, and brand.

Under the terms of the deal, Abu Dhabi’s DCT will finance the construction cost entirely and pay ongoing royalties tied to ticket sales, intellectual property, and support services until the venue’s inauguration. The financial support from DCT is significant, with the department agreeing to a franchise initiation fee and royalties for using Sphere Entertainment Group’s intellectual property, establishing a strong financial base for the partnership.

Expanding beyond Las Vegas is crucial for Sphere Entertainment, as despite successful performances and positive visitor feedback, the $2.3 billion Las Vegas Sphere reported an operating loss of $108 million in Q4 2024. Sphere’s CEO, James Dolan, has stressed the importance of duplicating the Sphere model in new markets to ensure long-term profitability.

The 25-year partnership agreement includes options for two additional 10-year extensions, providing DCT with the necessary tools to authentically replicate the Sphere experience in Abu Dhabi. Following regulatory challenges that led to the suspension of the London project, Sphere Entertainment continues its global expansion plans with the aim of introducing smaller venues with around 5,000 seats for greater flexibility.

With Sphere Entertainment recently reincorporating in Nevada, there is a strengthened link to the state, which serves as a more favorable and business-friendly environment for the company’s long-term growth. Approximately 90% of Sphere’s properties and assets are located in Nevada, making the state an ideal headquarters for the organization.

As Sphere Abu Dhabi emerges as the flagship project for global expansion, the partnership with the UAE capital will position it at the forefront of entertainment innovation. By combining live performances, cinema, art, and cutting-edge technology in one groundbreaking venue, Abu Dhabi will play a key role in Sphere Entertainment’s international growth journey. Construction timelines for the Abu Dhabi project have not yet been disclosed, but it is evident that Sphere’s pursuit of global expansion is only just beginning.
