Government blocks multiple platforms for adult content violations
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has recently taken action against 24 apps and websites for promoting inappropriate and indecent content. These platforms have been found to be in violation of various Indian laws concerning digital content and the depiction of women. Under the Information Technology Act of 2000, the Ministry has instructed all Internet Service Providers in the country to block access to these platforms.
The banned platforms include popular streaming and entertainment apps that have come under scrutiny in the past for their explicit content. Some of the notable names on the list are ALTTULU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, and Boomex, among others. These platforms have been accused of distributing sexually explicit material and presenting women indecently, which goes against laws such as Section 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 4 of The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
In order to ensure that the ban is effectively enforced, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is working in conjunction with the Department of Telecommunications and Internet Service Providers to swiftly implement the restrictions nationwide. This coordinated effort aims to restrict public access to platforms that are in violation of existing laws governing online content and the portrayal of women.
The legal basis for the Ministry’s actions is grounded in specific legal provisions, including Section 67 and 67A of the IT Act, which prohibit the dissemination of obscene and sexually explicit material online. Additionally, Section 294 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, address the penalization of obscene acts and the prohibition of indecent representations of women in media.
This recent crackdown on apps and websites distributing obscene content reflects the Indian government’s commitment to upholding decency and respect for women in digital spaces. By leveraging legal frameworks and collaborating with telecommunications authorities and ISPs, the Ministry aims to create an online environment that aligns with the country’s values and standards.
