Former Secret Service special agent transitions to Managing Director role at Bank of America
Bank of America recently welcomed Pablo Martinez, a former special agent with the Secret Service, to their team as a senior vice president and intelligence executive for global information security. Martinez brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent eight years at Fidelity overseeing the financial intelligence unit and cybersecurity operations before moving to BofA.
Martinez’s journey into the world of banking began in 2012 when he joined Citi as a managing director. During his time at Citi, he founded the Citi Cybersecurity Fusion Centre (CSFC) and assembled a team of 20 specialists in the field. The CSFC, as described in a 2018 SEC filing, was established with the goal of preventing, preempting, mitigating, responding to, and recovering from cyber threats and attacks. The team operates out of two global centers located in the US and Singapore.
Prior to his foray into banking, Martinez dedicated 22 years of his career to the US Secret Service, focusing on investigating money laundering and network intrusions for financial institutions and trading platforms. His expertise in cybersecurity was recognized when he testified before the US Senate on critical matters related to cybersecurity. In addition, Martinez led an electronic crimes task force in New York, further solidifying his reputation as a cybersecurity expert.
Bank of America, like many other financial institutions, faced cybersecurity challenges earlier this year. A data breach notification filed in Maine revealed that information belonging to 414 customers was compromised due to a breach involving one of their third-party providers. This incident underscores the growing concern in the industry, as highlighted by JPMorgan’s Chief Information Security Officer Patrick Opet in an open letter addressing the vulnerabilities posed by the Software as a Service (SaaS) model in enabling cyberattacks.
Martinez’s extensive background in cybersecurity and risk management positions him as a valuable addition to Bank of America’s efforts to enhance their information security measures. His experience in leading global cybersecurity operations, coupled with his deep understanding of financial institutions’ vulnerabilities to cyber threats, makes him a key asset in safeguarding the bank’s infrastructure and data from potential attacks. As the landscape of cybersecurity continues to evolve, having a seasoned professional like Martinez on board is crucial for ensuring the integrity and security of Bank of America’s digital assets.
