Jane Street to dispute market manipulation charges by Indian regulator, according to email
Jane Street, a US trading firm, is planning to challenge findings by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) alleging market manipulation in the country. In an internal email viewed by Reuters, Jane Street expressed deep disappointment and termed the regulatory accusations as highly polemic. The firm announced its intention to prepare a formal response to the charges.
SEBI recently banned Jane Street from trading securities in the Indian market and froze $567 million of its funds, extending its investigation to include other indices and exchanges. The company is accused of artificially propping up the Bank Nifty Index by buying large quantities of index members, both in the spot market and futures market, while simultaneously building substantial short positions in index options.
In response to the accusations, Jane Street expressed frustration at being misrepresented and emphasized its efforts to engage in constructive dialogue with SEBI since February, only to face constant rejection. The regulatory scrutiny examined Jane Street’s trading behavior over a span of more than two years.
The Chairman of the Indian securities watchdog announced plans to intensify monitoring to scrutinize derivative trading manipulation more closely. India, a major player in the global derivatives market, accounted for about 60% of the total volume in stock derivatives trading in April, with approximately 7.3 billion transactions.
Despite repeated requests for comments, SEBI did not respond to Reuters outside of normal business hours. The Financial Times initially reported on Jane Street’s decision to contest the SEBI findings.
The legal battle between Jane Street and SEBI underscores the complexities and challenges faced by international trading firms operating in various markets. The implications of the ongoing dispute between Jane Street and the Indian regulatory authority could have broader implications for market participants and regulators worldwide.
The allegations of market manipulation and the subsequent legal actions against Jane Street highlight the critical role of regulatory bodies in ensuring transparency and fairness in financial markets. The controversy surrounding Jane Street’s trading practices in India calls for a thorough investigation and swift resolution to maintain trust and integrity in the global financial system.
