SEBI Chief Tuhin Kanta Pandey: Market Manipulation Not Tolerated in Indian Markets
SEBI Chairperson Tuhin Kanta Pandey emphasized the unwavering stance against market manipulation by the capital markets regulator. Following the action taken against the US trading entity Jane Street and three related entities, Pandey reiterated the commitment to upholding market integrity and surveillance of such illegal practices.
With increased scrutiny and monitoring, SEBI aims to maintain a level playing field for all market participants. Speaking at an event hosted by the Bombay Chartered Accountants Society, Pandey stressed the importance of transparency in disclosing related party transactions and managing conflicts of interest. These responsibilities are deemed essential, non-negotiable aspects in ensuring ethical practices within corporate governance.
Furthermore, Pandey addressed the charter accountants present, emphasizing their critical role in ensuring corporate governance standards go beyond a mere checklist exercise. While acknowledging the compliance burden faced by organizations, he highlighted the need for effective results with minimal compliance, suggesting a balance between adherence to regulations and practical outcomes.
The recent crackdown on Jane Street and its affiliated entities sent a clear message regarding SEBI’s strict enforcement policies. The directive to deposit illegal gains of Rs 4,843.5 crore underscores the seriousness with which the regulator approaches offenses related to market manipulation. Not only were these entities prohibited from accessing the market, but their bank accounts faced a debit freeze as part of the enforcement action.
SEBI’s order revealed that Jane Street derived substantial profits amounting to Rs 43,289.33 crore from trading in index options on Indian exchanges over a specific timeframe. This significant financial gain was deemed illicit, prompting SEBI to take decisive action against the US trading firm and its subsidiaries. While Jane Street has expressed reservations regarding the regulator’s findings, SEBI remains firm in its stance, restricting their market activities and participation as part of the enforcement measures.
The regulatory clampdown serves as a strong deterrent against malpractices in the financial markets, reiterating SEBI’s commitment to maintaining market integrity, fairness, and transparency. By enforcing stringent penalties and restrictions on violators, the regulator aims to foster a secure and ethical trading environment for all stakeholders. Undoubtedly, SEBI’s proactive approach to curbing market manipulation aligns with its mandate to safeguard investor interests and uphold the credibility of Indian capital markets.
