Aspen Insurance’s IPO generates nearly $400 million

Apollo Global Management recently concluded a successful IPO, raising $397.5 million for Aspen Insurance Holdings. The IPO saw 13.25 million shares priced at around $30 each, valuing Aspen at approximately $2.8 billion. This move marks a resurgence in US IPO activity following a lull attributed to concerns stemming from former President Donald Trump’s trade pronouncements.

The ongoing disruptions in the insurance industry such as increased premiums due to natural catastrophe-related claims have influenced the IPO market. While some insurers have reported mark-to-market declines on fixed income portfolios, these changes might not affect long-term investors who typically hold assets until maturity.

In 2024, Aspen reported $486.1 million in net income on revenue of $3.26 billion, compared to $534.7 million in net income on $2.97 billion in revenue the previous year. Apollo Global Management’s stake in Aspen is projected to decrease from 99.8% to 86.7% following the IPO, a significant shift since acquiring Aspen in a $2.6 billion deal in 2019.

Aspen has indicated changes in its business operations under the leadership of CEO Mark Cloutier, predominantly reducing reinsurance and property catastrophe exposure. Cloutier’s role, following Apollo’s purchase of Aspen, highlights notable adjustments to the company’s business mix. Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Jefferies led the underwriting group for Aspen’s IPO, with shares now trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol AHL.
