US teen files lawsuit against Roblox and Discord for allegedly enabling sexual exploitation of minor
A US teenager has initiated legal action against Roblox and Discord, accusing the companies of being responsible for facilitating her sexual exploitation as a minor. The lawsuit, filed by Anapol Weiss and Girard Sharp on April 21, 2025, alleges that Roblox and Discord played a significant role in the teen’s severe injuries through the creation, design, marketing, and distribution of their mobile and web applications.
The plaintiff, who remained anonymous, claimed that she was introduced to Roblox at the age of 12 with her father’s approval. However, her parents later discovered that a child predator had manipulated her to send explicit images and videos. According to court documents, the girl was groomed by the predator due to the actions of the defendants, leading to her severe mental and emotional distress.
The lawsuit further detailed the harmful effects of the exploitation on the teenager, citing significant declines in her academic performance, social interactions, and overall well-being. It highlighted the profound impact the exploitation had on her mental health, causing depression and social withdrawal, leading her to isolate herself from friends and struggle with basic daily activities.
The 18-year-old Floridian teen is seeking compensation for various claims, including fraudulent concealment, negligent misrepresentation, general negligence, failure to warn, unreasonable design, negligent undertaking, and strict liability in design defect and failure to warn. The lawsuit underscores the responsibility of technology companies in safeguarding minors from predatory behaviors and harmful online activities.
In response to the allegations, Roblox expressed its commitment to the safety and protection of its community members, particularly children. The company emphasized its investment in advanced technologies, such as robust filters and human moderation teams, to detect and address inappropriate content and behavior. Additionally, Roblox announced ongoing efforts to enhance safety practices and ensure a secure and positive environment for all platform users, emphasizing its dedication to maintaining a safe online space.
Roblox’s involvement in an investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was also highlighted in the lawsuit. While details of the investigation remain undisclosed to prevent any disruption to the ongoing proceedings, it underscores the significance of regulating online platforms and holding them accountable for facilitating potentially harmful activities, especially involving minors.
Recently, Roblox announced updates to its parental controls, introducing new features to enhance child safety on the platform. The additions include options to block other users, restrict access to certain games, and provide parents with insights into their children’s activities on the platform. These initiatives demonstrate the company’s ongoing commitment to improving safety measures and ensuring a secure online environment for young users.
The lawsuit against Roblox and Discord sheds light on the critical issue of online safety, particularly concerning the protection of minors from exploitation and harmful behaviors. It underscores the importance of holding technology companies accountable for their role in facilitating such incidents and reinforces the need for stringent measures to safeguard vulnerable users in the digital age.
